Labeling Theory holds that no act is inherently evil, bad, or criminal. Whether an act is considered deviant or criminal depends on a number of factors, including: (1) when and where the act is committed, (2) who commits the act and who is the victim, and (3) the consequences of the act. Consider the taking of a life and the labels “Murderer”, “Soldier”, and “Executioner”, and the impact that each of those labels would have on the future behaviors/life of the individual labeled.
Identify two real life individuals (you will need to do some Internet research for this) who have committed acts that have been interpreted positively by some people and negatively by others. (ex. Batman, Hero or Criminal)
For Each individual (discuss the individuals separately, not togther):
Give a brief summary of the actions of the individual chosen that were questionable.
Identify the reasoning for the negative response. Identify the label that people holding this position applied to the individual. Describe/show what impact that label had on the individual’s life/behavior?
Identify the reasoning for the positive response. Identify the label that people holding this position applied to the individual. Describe/show what impact did that label had on the individual’s life/behavior?
