Federalist Papers Rubric: You are to write about either Federalist 10 or Federalist 51 in your essay. Below is a detailed rubric that should help guide you as you compose your essay.
Summary: 10 Points: Your summary should be a detailed multi- paragraph section of your work. You will be
graded on how well you understood Madison’s arguments in either Federalist 10 or Federalist 51, and you will be
graded on how well you can synthesize his arguments. You are also expected to avoid using informal language and use of the first person, and are expected to cite Madison in the text, in your summary.
Analysis: 10 Points: Your analysis should be a detailed multi-paragraph evaluation of Madison’s arguments in
either Federalist 10 or 51. You are expected to use outside secondary sources or primary sources to buttress any
argument you make. You are also expected to avoid the use of the first-person when you make your arguments. This includes, “I” “Me” “We” “Us” “My’ “Mine” “Myself” “Our” “Ours” and “Ourselves”
Citation: 10 Points: You are expected to adhere to either MLA or Chicago citation style. You are required to
have a works cited page at the end of your essay that is separate from the essay. You are expected to also use in-text citations every time you paraphrase an idea, thought, or argument that is not your own, and when you directly quote from someone or something.
Sources: 10 Points: You are required to have at least one primary and one secondary source. Your primary
source must be a historical document. Your primary source cannot be the Federalist Paper you chose. Your secondary
source must be from an article written in a peer-reviewed academic journal.
Grammar: 5 Points: You are required to follow the rules of English grammar. This means no comma splices, no
typos or misspellings, and no run-on or incomplete sentences.
Format: 5 Points: You are required to follow the format style of either MLA or Chicago. This means that your
essay must be double-spaced, have a page number with a header, have 1 inch margins, and have a title. You do not need a cover page, a long title, or section titles like Summary: Analysis: etc.
