PART 2: Essay (80%). Each student is required to produce an essay of no more than 2,000 words on one of the
topics listed below.
1. Explain the growth of city centre housing in British cities over the past two decades. Discuss the role
played by public policy in facilitating the development of city centre housing. What are the principal
benefits of larger city centre populations, and are there any drawbacks?
2. To what extent have accounts of counter-urbanisation and the ‘shrinking city’ proved to be an
accurate description of contemporary urban change in Britain? What factors explain any variations in
the form and scale of population change across British cities over the past 25 years?
3. In what ways might a geographical region be defined for the purposes of delivering effective
economic development, planning and regeneration policies? Discuss the extent to which city-regions
in England provide an effective basis for managing economic development, planning and
regeneration.
