Uniform History: Then vs Now
The Army is a profession. A Soldier’s appearance measures part of their professionalism. Proper wear of the Army uniform is a matter of personal pride for all Soldiers. It is indicative of esprit de corps and morale within a unit (Army 2021). The main three uniforms that soldiers wear while on duty are the Army Combat Uniform, Army Service Uniform, and Army Physical Fitness uniform. Over the last decade the Army has transitioned many variations of its major three uniforms. The Army Combat Uniform has evolved over the years with consideration to modern combat in order to fit the times and conflict and to take advantage of changes in tactics and technology. The Army Physical Fitness uniform changes were established based off of high-performance fabrics and durability and soldier comfort during physical fitness training. The Army Service Uniform design is constructed from the World War II, “Greatest Generation” concept. The overall idea is to inspire the next Generation of soldiers and enhance spirit de corps, as well as attract quality individuals to join the Army. The changes to all three uniforms were necessary, both mission essential and aesthetically appealing.
