Sacred Journey
Religious rituals help participants cleanse their souls and minds and wash away sins. Some religious rituals can be believed to save the participants. For example, in Ethiopia, the priests state that “he who comes here to live, he who comes here to pray, he who comes here to die will be saved. Religious rituals are a significant part of any religious, and they can create a sense of belongingness for participates, while helping to establish their identity in their religious beliefs. I do think power and hierarchy might be involved because religions have a leader, whether it is a priest or Messiah or a God, and the followers who listen and participate in what the leader instructs. The leaders’ beliefs are the beliefs that are taught to the followers or others.
One symbol is the cross. The cross symbolizes the suffering but sacrifice that was felt for the freedom and life of other people. Many times, the cross holds Jesus on it to show the sacrifice of life he made for the people. People can hang the cross in their house to show their religious beliefs, and many people wear it around their necks to carry and display their religious beliefs. In the religion Taoism, a tiger was a symbol of yin. Many people would place their hands on a stone tiger to seek good fortune. People would place their hands on the stone tiger on the first day of the year at the monastery.
Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia was once the largest church in the Christian world, and it was used to symbolize Constantinople- now it is a massive museum. Past rituals can still be used today because it helps to preserve the religious beliefs and religious rituals that were used when first being practiced. Rituals help connect present-day believers/practices to past believers to help provide a sense of belonging. These can help preserve memories and keep the faith/religion accurate and become more widely known/practiced. Some other rituals that help maintain historical connections are fasting, prayers, communion, and baptisms.
