These instructions are to be followed for the literature review draftsand the final literature Review. Both assignments will be graded based on how well they meet the requirements indicated in this document. Read this document entirely (all three pages) and follow all guidelines and instructions.
Details about requirements for each section are below. Please follow the format and order provided below. The outline you have already submitted will help with this.
For this literature review, you are reviewing literature about a social problem you think is important to study further.
I. Introduction: Your Introduction should consist of multipleparagraphs (see below), and it should be ½-1 page, double-spaced.You should have a heading for the introduction (stating Introduction), and it should be bold and to the far left of the page.Indent the first line of each paragraph of each section.
a. Introduce your research topic. You should state the topicclearly and concisely.
b. Explain why this topic is important sociologically. Don’t go into too much detail here yet. Just write a few sentences about why this topic is important to society. Do not state your opinion or personal experiences. Cite the importance of the topic using a valid source and use ASA format for your citation.
c. Explain how your review is organized.
What are the main concepts that will be addressed in your literature review?
Let’s say your paper is about racism in US media and you chose to review literature on the three related concepts of racial stereotypes in popular US television sitcoms/comedies; racial stereotypes in popular crime shows; and racial stereotypes in popular US television horror films.
This paper explores three of the main concepts that relate to the topic of racial stereotypes in US media. The concepts covered in this paper are racial stereotypes in popular US television sitcoms/comedies; racial stereotypes in popular crime shows; and racial stereotypes in popular US television horror films.
Then, briefly (in a sentence or two for each concept), how does each concept relate to the larger topic you are studying? For this assignment, stick with three concepts here. Cite any information you provide.
II. Body: Your body should be comprised of sections that correspond to the concepts you indicate in the Introduction(paragraph c above). You need a heading for each section, and the heading should reflect your concept. Do not number the headings. Indent the first line of each paragraph of each section.
For the example above, the three sections and their headings would be:
I. racial stereotypes in popular US television sitcoms/comedies; II. racial stereotypes in popular crime shows; and III. racial stereotypes in popular US television horror films.
Do not forget to introduce and close each section with a sentence focused on the literature (topic sentence and concluding sentence). You must cite all information that you present in ASA format. Do not make claims that are not backed by research, and do not state your opinion.
• Length of body: about 4-6 pages, double-spaced. (Length of each section will vary, but each section typically contains several paragraphs.)
You lose points if you do not meet the above requirements.
III. Conclusion: Summarize what the literature says about your topic and cite this info even if it is already cited in the body of the paper. Identify gaps in the existing research, identify any inconsistencies in published research on your topic, and make suggestions for future studies that would improve our understanding of the issue. You can also include policy implications. Do not state your opinion.
• Approximate length: about ½-1 page, double-spaced.
You lose points if you do not meet the above requirements.
Other Paper Guidelines:
Cover Page: You will need a cover page with your name, the course name, and the topic of your literature review. (This is worth 5 points).
ASA Reference and Citations: You will also need to include aseparate Reference Page at the end of the Literature Review, and you need to use in-text citations for any sources you use. Each source used in the paper must be on the Reference Page, and vice versa. You must use ASA format for your references and citations; refer to the guidelines in Canvas.
If you do not have any in-text citations, you lose 30 points. If yourin-text citations are formatted incorrectly, you lose points based on how greatly they depart from correct ASA format. If you do not have a reference page, you lose 30 points. If your reference page is formatted incorrectly, you lose points based on how greatly it departs from correct ASA format. If you present info in the paper that is not cited, but that should be, you’ll lose points. If you have citations in the paper that are not in the reference page (or vice-versa), you’ll lose points.
Paper Requirements: The paper itself must be 5-8 pages (NOT counting the cover page and reference page), double-spaced, using 12-point font. (You will lose 5 points for each page the paper is too long or too short).
You should have at least 5 (valid, academic) sources. DO NOT USE WEBSITES (unless you use “.gov” sites, but check with me before you do). DO NOT USE Wikipedia. If you cannot find an academic journal or book to use, you might need to choose a new topic. (You will lose 5 points if you have less than 5 valid sources).
Use normal margins (1’’ all around). Begin the paper near the top of the first page… DO NOT space down several times. Only the title of the paper and your name are necessary on the first page of the paper before you begin the actual paper. Also, include page numbers.
You lose points if you do not meet these requirements.
More Guidelines: (You will lose points if you do not follow the guidelines below):
Don’t use contractions in the paper.
Don’t write in first or second person.
Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling in the paper.
Do not state your opinion.
For the most part, you are to paraphrase material instead of using direct quotations or block quotes. I will allow you to use one (1-3 sentences) direct quote. If you choose to do this, cite the quoted material properly.
Do not cut and paste from other work. This is plagiarism, which results in a grade of 0 and might result in disciplinary action. Paraphrase the work you’re using and cite it properly.
Do not include the titles of journal, articles, books, or any other sources you cite in the body of the paper. That info goes only on the reference page. When you are discussing someone’s research, you might try this:
McNamee (2020) found that ………. OR Research shows that ……… (McNamee 2020).
AND: When I grade the drafts, I expect you to follow all of these guidelines. I will grade them based on how well you meet these requirements. And, when I grade your final paper, I will compare the comments I made for your drafts to see if you made the requested revisions. If you do not make any and all recommended changes, you will receive a score that is at least 10 points lower than the draft score.
