Final Project Milestone Three: Helping Process Discussion

For this assignment, you will post in the Helping Process Discussion. Select one client-facing role that is used by human services professionals within the organization you selected for your final project. Then, create a post that names the role, explains the different responsibilities of the profession, and provides examples of how this role relates to the steps of the larger helping process used.

Discussion: Stages of the Helping Process

In Chapter 7 of your textbook and in the overview, you began to explore the helping process. Consider a time when you helped a friend or family member. Describe how your process of understanding the problem and offering assistance compared to the different phases of the helping process described in Chapter 7 of the textbook. Submit your answers to the questions in your initial post. Be sure not to reveal any personal information about the individual you helped within your post.

Project One

Competency

In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competency:

  • Explain how the rule of law influences professional practice in criminal justice

Scenario

You are a community outreach coordinator at your local law enforcement agency. The department has undertaken an initiative to reach out to diverse populations in your community. There is always a need in your community for support toward becoming a citizen. For example, numerous recent immigrants, resident aliens, and documented immigrants could all benefit from outreach materials that explain how the criminal justice system works in the United States. You have been given the task of creating outreach materials for this initiative. The materials you’ll create for this project are specific to the rule of law and the Constitution.

Directions

Week 3 Assignment – Reflexive Paper

Overview

We all have different experiences going through life. Those experiences shape how we view the world and how we behave in it. In this assignment you are going to look at your own experiences of the world and culture we live in by being reflexive. As you have learned over the past few weeks, reflexivity is “disciplined self-reflection” meant to build deeper understanding, not just of ourselves, but of the larger world. The goal of reflexivity is to understand others so that we can understand ourselves and grow. To be disciplined, the reflection needs to be purposeful and directed, meaning we need to look at something specific in the world and then compare it to our own personal experiences and decide if this new knowledge changes how we think and feel.

This assignment provides an opportunity for you to delve deeper into your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and gain a better understanding of your own personal lens. By being reflexive, you will better understand how social and cultural norms, assumptions, biases, environment, and background shape your worldview.

Requirements

Find an article published within the last 18 months that discusses issues related to one of the following topics:

  • Economic inequity.
  • Racial inequity.
  • Global inequity.
  • Health care inequity.
  • Gender and sexuality.

Then in a 2–3 page paper, discuss the following:

  • Summarize the issue presented.
  • Describe your overall impression of the issue as presented in the article:
    • Do you agree or disagree with the author? Why?
    • What in your personal experience may have influenced your thinking about this issue? Consider social/cultural norms, religious beliefs, environment, and background.
  • Cite your source to support your writing. Choose a source that is credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite the source listed at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Explore the relationship between an individual’s worldview and their social/cultural norms, assumptions, biases, environment, and background.

4-2 Module Four Assignment

Prompt

In Module Two, you learned about how law enforcement functions; in Module Three, you learned about the courts. This assignment will assist you as you begin to create presentation materials for Project Two. Complete the template using the provided Module Four Assignment Template Word Document. Use this document to illustrate the specific functions and processes of law enforcement and court systems, as well as how they work together in a specific case. Following the template, you will find a few follow-up questions. Answer each question in two to five sentences, and use examples from the resources to support your responses. These should elaborate on the information presented in your template.

Law Enforcement

  • Identify the functions of law enforcement related to sanctuary cities in the resources provided. Be sure to include the following:
    • What law enforcement is allowed to do according to Senate Bill 4
    • What impact or lack thereof the law has had on police operations

Courts

  • Identify the functions of court systems related to sanctuary cities in the resources provided. Be sure to include the following:
    • What the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit did
    • The Constitutional issues that may arise

Function Together

  • Describe how the U.S. law enforcement and court systems relate to sanctuary cities using information from the resources provided. Be sure to include the following:
    • How they responded to the shared issues
    • One challenge area for the police in relationship to holding detainees

Resources:

Specifically, the following rubric criteria must be addressed:

  • Identify functions of law enforcement, including their jurisdictions, related to sanctuary cities
  • Identify functions of court systems in the United States, including their jurisdictions, related to sanctuary cities
  • Describe how law enforcement and court systems function together within the U.S. criminal justice system

Discussion: Make Your Case

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, in his dissenting opinion for Glossip v. Gross, wrote:

Nearly 40 years ago, this Court upheld the death penalty under statutes that, in the Court’s view, contained safeguards sufficient to ensure that the penalty would be applied reliably and not arbitrarily. . . . The circumstances and the evidence of the death penalty’s application have changed radically since then . . . those changes, taken together with my own 20 years of experience on this Court, . . . lead me to believe that the death penalty, in and of itself, now likely constitutes a legally prohibited “cruel and unusual punishmen[t].” (Death Penalty Information Center)

Take a position. Do you agree or disagree that capital punishment is cruel and unusual punishment?

First, title your initial post either “The death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment” or “The death penalty is not cruel and unusual punishment.”

Then, using the U.S. Constitution (specifically the Eighth Amendment) as the basis for your position, make your case. Why is or isn’t capital punishment cruel and unusual punishment? Think about each of the four purposes of punishment and how these purposes, the Constitution, and your ideas all intersect.

In your responses to your peers, consider how they used the Constitution to defend their position. Do you agree with their interpretation of this document? Why or why not? How does their interpretation differ from yours? Which of their points or arguments make the most sense to you, even if you still disagree with their overall position?

Final Project Milestone Two: Human Services Timeline Discussion

For this assignment, you will post in the Human Services Timeline Discussion. Your post should do two things. First, it should note the founding of the organization you chose for the final project and include a few sentences explaining who established it, why is was established, and the mission of the organization. Second, it should describe one event in human services history (at the state, national, or international level) that relates to your agency (e.g., a new law or policy, a historical event). This milestone is to help you to discuss similarities and differences between the history of the agency you chose and the history of the human services field.

For more information, view the following documents:

Discussion: A Current Issue

In your textbook, you reviewed what impact more current history has had on human services. Current events and news stories can shed a lot of light on the trends impacting human services agencies. Locate two different newspaper or journal articles on the same issue, published within the last year. To locate articles through the SNHU Shapiro Library, use the Multi-Search option on the Shapiro Library homepage under the “Find books, articles, and more:” heading. And follow these steps:

  1. Type a search phrase into the search box and click Search.
  2. Refine search to items with “full text online.”
  3. Refine search to desired content type.
  4. Fill in the Publication Date fields to limit your search to articles published within the last year.

Post a summary of the issue and information from both articles that best describe the issue. Explain how the issue impacts the work of human services agencies.

Journal: Visit an Agency and Reflect

Go sit in the waiting room of a human services agency in your community. If you are not able to visit an agency in person, refer to one of the agencies featured in one of the optional resources for the module (Bringing Storytime to the Long Wait for Social Services or What if Our Healthcare System Kept Us Healthy?). Consider the following questions from the point of view of a worker at the agency and that of a client:

  1. What do you think it is like to work at the agency? What might the agency look like through the clients’ eyes?
  2. If you worked at the agency, what do you think your day-to-day challenges would be and why?
  3. How could you suggest an improved experience or environment to support the agency’s clients?

It is important to understand the human services waiting room from the perspective of both an employee and a client in need of services. Submit your answers as a journal assignment.
