Literary Analysis Essay Prompt
Your literary analysis paper should focus on one or two of the following texts. If you choose any of the full novels, you may write on a single text. If you choose shorter texts, your essay must be comparative.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
“The Goophered Grapevine”
“School Days of an Indian Girl”
“The End of Something”
Any of the modernist poems from our packet
The Great Gatsby
Their Eyes Were Watching God
Focus on a key theme or issue in the text(s) of your choice. Make an original argument about the way in which the theme is developed both across the text as a whole as well. In order to defend your assertions and deepen your analysis, you should also engage in meaningful close reading. This means that you might consider a passage at length or narrow in on several short quotations. Rather than using quotations simply as evidence for your points, allow textual ambiguity to complicate your argument.
Please note that as this is a culminating assignment that you should spend substantial time on, grading standards will be stricter than on the midterm or Keywords essay.
You are strongly encouraged, but not required, to attend office hours to discuss potential topics with Professor McWilliams.
Utilize MLA format for your headers and parenthetical citations. Turn your essay in using Word or Powerpoint. Other formats (links to Google Docs, Pages, etc.) will not be accepted.
Grading Criteria
Originality of argument: 30%
Clarity of expression (including both content and grammar): 30%
Incorporation of close reading: 30%
Understanding of key themes addressed in class: 10%

The title of this play is based upon the poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes. Identify 3 major themes presented in this play and discuss how these themes you have chosen provide a deepening understanding of your perspective on race, class, and personal identity. You can do this by focusing on several of the characters individually. What do we learn through each character or through the lead characters combined?
