Evaluation of Research Design Components Wk2
When engaging in research or data analyses, the ability to spot ethical pitfalls is key. Understanding research design and methods allows the individual to spot faulty reasoning and to point out conclusions that could be unethical or dangerous. This is an applicable skill set for many different career paths. In this 3-part questionnaire, you will be assessed on your understanding of the various components of research design and the scientific method.
Select 2 research articles from peer-reviewed psychology journals in the University Library. Refer to Table 2.2, “A List of Psychological Journals by Type of Article Published,” located on p. 71 in Ch. 2 of The Process of Research and Statistical Analysis in Psychology, to help you with your search. This list includes both general psychology journals and journals that specialize in a particular area of psychology.
Apply the scientific method to evaluate the evidence presented in the articles you selected. Use these articles as a framework for completing the following 3-part questionnaire.
Part 1
Write a 75- to 125-word answer to each of the following questions:
What is the purpose of each of the sections in a typical research article?
What are the steps to critically evaluate research articles, and how does the scientific method help you do this?
Part 2
Write a 75- to 125-word answer to each of the following questions:
What is the importance of research in behavioral sciences?
What is the relationship between applied research and basic research? Provide an example, from your selected studies, of how each contributes to the body of knowledge.
What ethical issues can you identify in the selected articles? How were the issues addressed or neglected?
Part 3
Write a 75- to 125-word answer to each of the following questions:
Identify 3 research topics that you might want to explore further as you go through this course.
List appropriate sources, including databases, that you might use when exploring these topics.
Include a title and reference page and format your citations and references according to APA 7th edition guidelines. Follow APA spacing guidelines (double space your assignment).

cocaine, steroids, etc. The focus of the paper is on the specific substance/drug and the impacts on
the user.
Paper #1 should clearly address and present understanding of the following:
1. Overview of the pharmacological nature of the substance (characteristics and properties);
2. Drug administration (how the drug is administered or used);
3. Distribution and elimination (the route in which the substance takes once it enters the
body and how it is eliminated from the body);
4. Effects of the drug on the user (acute and chronic);
5. Treatment options specific to the drug and prognosis; and,
6. How the issues relevant to this drug have influenced the study of substance abuse and the
field of treatment.
Substance Abuse and the Family: It Affects More than just the Use

Social psychology includes the study of attitudes, persuasion, self-understandin

Social psychology includes the study of attitudes, persuasion, self-understanding, and people’s everyday behaviors in their relationships with others. In addition, social psychologists study social behavior and how people influence one another. A stereotype is a belief or expectation about a group of people. Prejudice is an unfavorable attitude toward a group of people. It is usually associated with discrimination, which is the unequal treatment of diverse groups.
Decades ago, Americans admitted their prejudices openly. Today, most people believe in fair treatment for everyone, or so they say. However, are people as unprejudiced as they claim to be? Researchers have sought ways to measure subtle prejudices people do not want to admit. A popular method is the implicit association test (IAT), which measures reactions to combinations of categories.
Watch Social Psychology: Stereotypes, Prejudice, & Discrimination: Defining Terms.

Then, reflect on your lived experiences and answer any three (3) of the questions below:
When have you been stereotyped?
What are the narratives surrounding your stereotyping experiences?
How did they make you feel?
How did you know you were being stereotyped?
How is the stereotype perpetuated?
Do you know others who have had to deal with a similar stereotype?
Do you know of any films, commercials, or books that reinforce this stereotype?
What can you do to manage these situations?
How do you want people to perceive you?
What can you do to change people’s perceptions?
