The assignment this week is to locate a local community assessment report about a topic in your community. Community assessment reports are public record and should be easy to find by searching online.
To begin, google your community name, then add “community health assessment” or add “law enforcement assessment” etc. You should find several options from this search. They are usually PDF reports that are linked to a public page. Most community assessment reports are between 50-100 pages. The report will contain a detailed summary of the assessment process, findings and recommendations. Your field agency might have participated in one before, so you can check with your supervisor if you want to.
Once you find a local community assessment report, please submit a word document with the name of the assessment and a weblink to the community assessment so the professor can review to ensure it will be appropriate to use for the of the assignment that will be due in Week 8. The professor will provide you feedback on whether you can use this for your upcoming assignment and whether to begin reading the report.

SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENT PAPER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
People are influenced by their environment. Through environmental exposure, people form
worldviews, thought processes, and ways of interacting with others. For this assignment, you
will need to identify and research local and state databases to identify the needs in your
community environment. This may help you gain an understanding of how your environment
influences you and how the environment could impact your future potential clients. Develop a 4-
6 page paper (not including the title page and references) that includes the information noted
below.
First: Provide a detailed overview of the community demographics including factors such as
population, racial makeup, crime rate, income levels, etc. What are the most important things to
know about your city? Are there any interesting facts? Also discuss why it is important for social
workers to be knowledgeable of their communities.
Second: Evaluate the community where you live in two of the categories listed below. Identify
the strengths (things your area may be doing well to address the issue) and needs (why is it an
issue, what are the stats, what is its impact on the community) associated with both categories.
Data and factual information should be provided to support need. Select two categories from
the list of social issues below:
Medical care/facilities and services
Mental health services
Crime
Homelessness rate (adults, children, families)
Substance abuse
Poverty
School systems
Environmental Issues
Third: Discuss where social workers are employed in your community. Consider settings such
as schools, hospitals, prisons, detention facilities, nursing homes, social service agencies,
afterschool programs, Head Start, Veteran’s services, mental health agencies, etc. Name specific
places. For instance, Freedom 424, an anti-trafficking organization in Forest, VA. employs
social workers. Saying an anti-trafficking organization would not be enough information.
At least 3 community/environment or government websites, databases, etc. should be cited, for a
minimum of 3 sources. There is not a maximum number of sources. Please follow the
instructions carefully, use the template provided, and use current APA format.

Your first case assignment is due this Friday. Pay close attention to each question and answer each separately. Your answers can be in narrative format. This is an interestng case of a 9 year old boy, accompanied by his mother to the session. The therapist is a very gifted solution focused therapist. Her clinical aim is not to diagnose Jason, but to find solutions to his stated fears. In the interview we can observe mother and Jason, but father and sister are not present. Listen carefully to how mother and Jason describe father and sister’s relationship to the presenting problem. Take a look at the lecture and power point file where risk and protective factors are discsussed. Relate as many as you can to the case. Level of impairment is a judgement call, ranging from mild, moderate to severe. We look at impairment as impacting social/peer functioning, academic/work functioning, and family functioning. In looking at family dynamics, think about how each member responds to the presenting problem, which are Jason’s fears. Think about what each family member does, or, doesn’t do. This is cricital when working with clients who have mental health conditions. Family dynamics are important in terms of course of illness and relapse. Family systmes may not have actually caused the mental health condition, but they can impact the course.

So my group of 5 worked in a community called Sisters located New Amsterdam, Guyana. it is a poor community where the police station don’t have a direct phone line nor transportation. my group decided to do an empowerment session with the community police and the at the police station where . we will be giving them one cell phone that have a phone number linked to the police headquarters and two bicycles in which the could do patrols seeking they are not of youths doing drugs at night around the community.
I will be sending over two power point one with the mapping of the community and one with the proposal. also the group member names and roles are in the proposal
