As we work through different types of disorders, it is easy to focus on the disorder itself, and forget about the person themselves…who have lives that have been drastically altered by their brain injury. As we wrap up our journey through the different types of aphasia, this module will help bring our focus back to the person. To complete this module, please watch Aphasia – The Movie, starring Carl McIntyre – an actor who experienced a stroke resulting in severe Broca’s aphasia. Then, follow the directions below to receive credit for the module.
There are two ways to watch the video: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/aphasia
Please note that there is some cursing in the movie…as we mentioned in class, automatic speech, like counting, common greetings, and curse words are often more available to individuals with aphasia than other words. But it is not superfluous. It is very much a real reflection of aphasia.
To receive credit for this module, please paste into the text box provided below a well-written paragraph (5-7 sentences) describing your overall observations and impressions about Carl’s story – include at least two examples seen in the movie about the symptoms of Broca’s aphasia we have covered in class, and also include at least two additional observations that you noticed regarding the burdens that aphasia has on a person’s life, beyond strictly the communication impairments themselves.

Describe your career objectives for the next 3–5 years (following successful completion of this
program), and how you plan to achieve them. The goal of this assignment is to create a personalized
guide for your professional development. Include a current resume and feel welcome to consider
factors such as personal/professional balance as they relate to your professional goals. You will be
evaluated on your content, organization of information, integration of information introduced in
class, and your writing mechanics (see grading rubric). This is a formal submission, so please ensure
that you submit a well-written paper that is professional in both presentation and tone. In your
paper, please discuss the following:
• Current clinical interests/experience in terms of skills and style; include an assessment of
your strengths and challenges/limitations.
• A specific job desired within 3–5 years. If you do not have a target job in mind (likely, many
of you won’t!), please use this assignment as an opportunity to research different career
paths/specializations and select a particular area/setting/population that strongly interests
you. What skills and experience are required to be hired for and excel in this desired job?
What challenges do you expect to face and how will you overcome them?
• A detailed plan to achieve your 3- to 5-year career goals. Include your strategy for expanding
your skills, strengthening expertise, and developing in areas of limitation.
• Select the state where you will most likely decide to practice following completion of this

For the first learning activity, you’ll be focusing on one part of Evidence-Based Practice: examining external evidence. You’ll do this by selecting a research article to read and analyze. (I suggest choosing one that aligns with your group project!) Reading research can feel overwhelming, but the best way to approach it is knowing that there will be some things you’ll understand and some things you won’t. (This is the case for me too!) The important thing is to determine the article’s main points and if they’re supported by the research design and results of the study. Don’t get too bogged down in the details. I’ve posted some Readings that can give you some ways to approach reading an article. I’d suggest trying to find an article that’s a randomized controlled trial (RCT) if you can.
After reading your article, submit the Article Analysis Worksheet.docx
to earn credit for this assignment. (There’s one bonus point available!)

After reading the chapter on disability models and watching Dr. Barnes’ presentation, write and submit a 2-3 page reflection
that addresses the following 3 ideas:
Based on what you’ve read and thought about, how would you describe the concept of “disability?” In what ways do you agree/disagree with some of the scholars’ definitions?
How have you seen the various models of disability reflected in our society? What are your thoughts and/or reactions to this?
How could models of disability affect our work in speech and hearing science?
