Please answer all three parts by Friday (~400-500 words total)
Use concrete examples from readings and web sources attached in this module in your posts
Reply to at least two peers (~100-150 words each)
Part 1: Introductions (~100-150 words)
Since this is your first post, please introduce yourself! (name, major, interests, etc)
Part 2: Analysis and Reflection (~150-200 words)
How did the armchair anthropology and the off-the-veranda approaches differ as methods to study culture? What can be learned about a culture by experiencing it in person that cannot be learned from reading about it?
To answer this, consider the fieldworkers your read about in the Perspectives chapter. Anthony Kwame Harrison, Bob Myers, and Lynn Kwiatkowski describe how they first became interested in anthropology and how they have used their training in anthropology to conduct research in different parts of the world. How do you think the participant-observation fieldwork they described leads to information that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to learn?
Part 3: ‘Ethics in the field’ Case Analysis (~150-200 words)
Use the American Anthropological Association “Cases & Solutions” site, think about the ethical decisions that ethnographers in the field may have to make.

How can Protein Synthesis and mRNA be used to help us?
These concepts are not just theoretical- they are being used today to make therapeutics and vaccines against Covid-19, and try and figure out who is most likely to get very ill (and a lot of other things!)
The first 2 released vaccines are based on mRNA, and you can read explanations about how those work right here- this paper is big on biology, so be sure to bring anthropological concepts into it as you work

10 points Introduction/Formatting
You should include a title page, your paper should be left-justified, and you should use MLA or ALA format for this paper.
.You should include a concluding paragraph to end it concisely
40 points-Introduction to the Research/Current State of the Research.
Review and summarize major work done in the field of study. This should be source-heavy
40 points- Opposing Viewpoints in the field of research
compare and contrast 2 opposing researchers- why do they oppose each other?
Which of them do you agree with?
This segment should be well-sourced.
40 points-Description of Further Research Needed/Research Question and Research Plan
Sources not required here- this is your research plan.
If offered a grant to continue the research, what should be done and how would you do it?
scoring will be as follows:
40 points: completely covered, well done! Clear understanding of the needs for future research, and your plan is worthy of funding unchanged!
37 points: ‘A’-level work, you have presented a clear and well-considered plan, and I would fund you- with perhaps a little bit of adjusting.
34 points: ‘B’-level work, well-done, a solid foundation to build on. I might not vote to fund you yet, but would certainly consider a future grant submission with some changes to the plan.
30 points: ‘C’-level work, while you have a plan that might eventually be applied, it needs more work to make it viable for approval.
24 points: incomplete or instructions not followed. A grant organization would not vote to fund this, though they may encourage you to keep working on your plan
below this will be a ‘0’. the material was not covered, there is no plan, or the plan is not acceptable based on what was covered in the course.
20 points-Short Story:
a brief fictionalized account of some aspect of the research, for example, if researching King Tutankhamun’s mummification, I might write a brief description of his funeral from the point of view of his wife.
This should be about 100 words.
no sources required here- this is scored as follows:
20 points: Great! The story is here, it is not too short or too long, and the facts in the tory are all supported by the rest of your paper!
17 points: Good story here! You may have strayed a bit from the facts, but you clearly understand your topic and can express details about it in this format. Length is acceptable.
15 points: The story is here, and it meets the requirements in its factual information and the length.
13 points: Facts do not match the research material, or length is incorrect. Below minimum requirements.
Below this will be a ‘0’ – there may be no segment that covers this, or it may not be on topic.

Students will analyze the cultural component(s) of a VICE report from one of the required Canvas modules. The paper must follow this template (https://www.dropbox.com/s/3aup9hinvwbkd8c/VICE_Report_Analysis_Template.docx?dl=0).
Reference Requirements
You must cite sources used in a References section at the end of your assignment. This should include the course textbook, the story being analyzed, and whatever sources you use to support your real world implications (e.g., news publications, recent scientific journal articles, etc.). Follow the citation guidelines outlined in the APA Style Guide (Links to an external site.) (note that APA formatting applies only to the References section; you do not need to include a Title Page or Abstract). Throughout the course we will be watching short documentary films produced by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous filmmakers. These films will relate to the weekly themes outlined below and provide students with a variety of perspectives on issues raised in class. In this assignment students are required to write a critical response to one of the films watched in class. Students can choose whichever film they want to write about. The assignment should be 1000 words and examine the film chosen in terms of how it presents a particular issue, i.e. what was the central issue/theme of the film?; what kinds of images were used?; what kind of message was trying to be delivered?; how were Indigenous peoples and territories represented?; do you think the filmmaker was successful?, etc. Response should incorporate THREE course readings in support of the overall analysis.
