Assignment Reminder: The goal of this assignment is for you to record a 2-3 minute speech to creatively introduce yourself to the class. To do this, you were to select an artifact that best represents some aspect of your identity. Using the chosen artifact as a point of departure, you should develop a speech that explains how it relates to your identity.
Keep in mind that the purpose of this speech is not to explain the artifact in detail, but to use it as a vehicle for you to introduce yourself to the class.
Before you record this speech:
Speech must have an introduction, body, and conclusion (see sample outline).
Speak from brief notes not a manuscript. Eye contact with the camera is vital.
Practice your speech at least 5-7 times in front of a mirror or recording device before you submit the final draft. You should know your time and get a feeling for the duration of the speech. Time and eye contact are very important for this assignment.
When practicing, pay special attention to your vocal variety, eye contact, use of pauses for dramatic effect and the time it takes to deliver, as the time cannot exceed 3 minutes but should not be shorter than 2 minutes.
Your classmates will be viewing and commenting on your speech.
You will be asked to view and comment on two of your classmate’s speeches.

After studying both of the assigned readings, Chapter 55: Media Portrayals and Representations and Chapter 57: Agenda Setting and Framing in 21st Century Communication: A Reference Handbook, answer the following questions and prompts regarding your favorite program or other chosen media content.
1. What device do you most often use for your favorite program watching or other chosen media? Do you agree that you favor the device that gives you access to the information and programming that most meets your needs?
2. How does the program meet your specific needs and goals? Who else do you know that also seeks out this programming (movie, TV, radio show, game) and do they do so for the same reasons as you? Why are their uses of this programming similar or different from your own?
3. What does this program or other media tell you about your place in the world in relation to how much access you have to things you want in the “real” world? When you are stressed out, do you turn to this programming more or less? Why?
4. What does this programming tell you about people who are different from you in terms of race, age, sexual orientation, political beliefs, socio-economic status, gender, religion, or nationality? Are they portrayed in a positive or negative light? What kinds of power do they have?
Each response to each question should be at least 100 words, so that the total of your written work in the paper is at least 400 words. Remember: 400 words is the minimum so if you would like to earn a better score you will add more details and examples to your responses and try to make each response at least 135 words.

Synthesize what you have learned about media and society in this course through

Synthesize what you have learned about media and society in this course through the writing of this final paper about music and its influences. Music is a medium that has shaped the ages. As noted throughout your texts, social movements have existed and evolved through many methods and vehicles. Music is one of those vehicles and music represents more than entertainment. It has spoken for generations and exemplified belief systems.
For your final paper assignment, you are to write a 3-4 page research essay (excluding APA title page, appendix, and reference sheet or bibliography) that addresses the following questions and contexts. In this paper, explore the relationship of music to at least three of the decades between the 1960s and today. Your paper should discuss high profile events or movements that happened in each of the three decades and for each decade pick a song that personifies or represents the primary “mood” of the decade. In the essay:
cite examples of how activism and social justice are exemplified through music
show how technology and social media influenced the listener’s reactions
The summary portion of the essay (perhaps at least 3/4 page of the entire essay) should draw connections between the decades and synthesize your findings. For instance, discuss what are commonalities of movements and people who are represented throughout the decades? Are these songs anthems for each decade or do the stand the test of time with other generations? Are there common threads that connect some decades with others?
Grading Guidelines
identify events in each decade
explain how events are connected to what the song represents
show how lyrics are used in the messaging (if full lyrics are used in the paper, they must be attached as an appendix and do not count in the 3-4 total pages)
help justify your opinions with 3-5 credible sources with proper source citation throughout the paper and in the bibliography
utilize terminology from the course readings when applicable
show how technology and social media or other media outlets influenced the listener’s reactions
use appropriate grammar and structure; college-level writing
make sure the summary is an appropriate length and draws connections between the decades and synthesizes the findings, such as what are the commonalities of the movements and people represented and addresses the question, “are these songs only anthems for each individual decade or do they also provide representation for and transfer to, other generations and decades?

2. Search for and post a link to a brief video clip (less than 5 minutes) that illustrates one of the bolded concepts or theories in Chapter 7.
Video should be clips of scripted or reality television from a major television network such as ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, or FOX. Video clips from movies are also acceptable.
Use good judgment in selecting your video clip as your classmates might watch it in view of colleagues at work or children at home.
For the sake of variety, choose a different clip than what your classmates have already posted.
3. Provide a 250-300 word summary in which you:
Identify and briefly explain one specific bolded concept or theory in Chapter 7.
For the sake of variety, choose a different concept than what your classmates have already posted. This means that you must keep abreast of your classmates’ posts in the discussion.
Explain in detail how the video illustrates that concept or theory.

Communications and Media
The media category that I choose is new media. New media makes up the current digital platforms of the internet, such as social media, online newspapers, online podcasts, and online films (Cote, 2022). I chose new media because it is the media category that I have been familiar with since I’ve grown in its age. Moreover, the new media supplies satisfaction and gratification for the needs of consumers of the current generation. The channel that I choose is movies. I choose movies because, in the current generation, the movie industry is one of the most influential sectors, where everyone owns audio visual output and input devices to watch videos. Movies are created in many ways having special effects such as green lights, models, editing, and equipment. In the new media, some more advancements and innovations have arisen in the world of movies. Therefore, I find movies the most interesting media channel, and I would like to explore the many ways in which movies are produced and the innovations in the future of movies.
Movies affect our cultures in various and diverse ways. American movies are an important part of the culture; they affect many cultures that consume them. Even though movies are sometimes exaggerated, the main aim is to tell the story; therefore, a movie displays society’s present, future, and past. Almost all movies leave an impression on the people who watch them. Various aspects of culture are affected by movies, from how the community’s feelings about things such as relationships, language, and politics to their morals and values. Movies may shape and solidify cultural beliefs, for instance, language or figures of speech and fashion trends (8.3 Movies and Culture – Understanding Media and Culture, n.d). Nowadays, most of the fashion trends are derived from movies. After the emergence of a movie, people may dress like what they have viewed. Additionally, the movie changes the cultural attitudes toward certain social issues (8.3 Movies and Culture – Understanding Media and Culture, n.d). People tend to change by copying how attitudes are displayed in a movie or adding new cultural aspects to the existing culture. Watching movies sometimes allows people to understand other cultures from faraway communities, thus making people culturally diverse. Furthermore, movies mirror our cultures; when a movie challenges cultural beliefs and morals, we can examine the culture and embrace change. For instance, for the beliefs that no longer serve us or are destructive in the present time, movies can help us with new means of replacing them. Similarly, culture has affected the creation of movies. Movies, as told, are an exaggerated truth, which means they are exaggerated scenarios, cultures, and situations of daily occurrences. Movies are often a story translated into a book and finally into a movie. Movies are the enhancement of the things that already exist. These include the narratives, predicaments, and characters that we know. In a movie, we may understand a character to the extent of having the same problems or seeing the situations they are going through in real life. Therefore culture, in general, has been trying to enhance our existing knowledge and make it more influential and accessible. For movies to be contemporary, they must reflect the existing topics in modern culture, keeping in mind that culture also changes with time and the emergence of trends. Further, movie plots are derived from the current happenings of the culture, such as poverty, wars, class divisions, environmental issues, and racism. Additionally, movie creation is aimed at meeting a wide target audience. Therefore, the movie creation is affected by culture when ensuring that the content is relatable to the audiences’ culture (Films as Social and Cultural History, n.d.). A movie production cannot create forbidden content or content that the audience will not well receive. These movies should be in line with the target audience’s culture and be related and interpreted appropriately.
