1. As you have probably noticed by now, comedy often deals with serious topics in a humorous way, allowing us to process and survive adversity in positive ways. Fey’s book is no exception. Choose one topic that could be considered serious, and discuss how she writes about it. What is her approach? What types of humor does she use, and what conclusions does she draw?
2. Discuss how Fey’s memoir embodies a comic vision perspective on life. Which of Morreall’s twenty contrasts do you see on display in Bossypants? Find at least one example and explain and discuss using evidence. How does the comic vision help Fey cope?
3. Now focus on the chapter “Sarah, Oprah, and Captain Hook.” This chapter weaves three major life events happening to Fey in the same week–arguably, the craziest week of her life. Briefly describe the event then discuss why Fey weaves them together the way she does. Which event seems to have more weight? Or are they all equal? What might be Fey’s perspective on how these three things fit together in her life, and do you think she’s making a larger point here? If so, what might it be?

In this essay, you will compare and contrast two
professions available to someone with your degree/major in order to determine
which profession is most advantageous to recent graduates. If you plan to
transfer to a four-year institution but do not yet know what major you will choose,
simply choose a major that interests you and is available at a four-year
college. The analysis may follow a point-by-point or subject-by-subject
organizational approach.
Choose three or four specific points of comparison that you
find the most interesting; then analyze both jobs. For example, what
responsibilities does each job require? What types of skills are necessary for
each profession, and why would someone with your degree qualify for the job?
Are these jobs available locally or would they require moving to another city,
state, or country?
Writing
Mode: When comparing and contrasting two professions, do not
simply list how the professions are similar and different; your thesis
statement should identify the profession that is most advantageous to recent graduates based on your analysis. Your
body paragraphs should expand on and support your thesis.
Research
and Content: Three sources are required from the GTC library
databases. If you are accessing the databases off campus, you will need a
library card. Contact your instructor or the library for assistance. The career
databases will help you get started.
Organization:
Your essay should be organized like this:
1. Introduction:
The introduction should introduce both professions, including their duties and
qualifications, and it should provide necessary background information to
prepare the reader for the thesis.
2. Thesis
statement (last sentence of introduction): Your thesis statement should
identify both professions and should preview your elements of comparison
between the two. The thesis statement should include your claim about which
profession is best for recent graduates.
3. Body
paragraphs: Because you may follow a point-by-point or subject-by-subject
organizational approach, your body paragraphs will either address one profession at a time, or they will compare and
contrast one aspect of both jobs in each paragraph.
4. Conclusion:
Your conclusion should not simply
summarize your essay. What are the takeaways from your essay? How do the
similarities and differences between the two jobs help recent graduates decide
which one to pursue?
Point of View:
· You
should be writing in third person (nouns, as well as he, she, they). Do not use first or second person (such as I
or we, or you, your, yours).
Length:
· Your
essay must be 750-1000 words in length.
There will be point deductions for going significantly over or under the
word count.
Outside Sources:
· You will
use three academic sources from the library databases (not Google).
· All
sources must be properly documented using in-text citations and a Works Cited
page. Both elements of MLA documentation must be included.
· You
may not submit an essay that you wrote for a previous class.
Format:
· Your
essay should be formatted according to MLA standards for essays, including
using Times New Roman, size 12 font, and giving the essay a reflective,
creative title.
Some Writing Tips:
· Read
multiple sources before choosing what to write about. Read with curiosity and
interest; don’t assume you already know everything about the professions you
will discuss. Be prepared to be surprised.
· Embrace
the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, conferences or peer review,
revision).
· Plan
to visit the Writing Center and ask for help (even if you don’t think you need
it).
· Ask
questions as you go!

department rubric.

This assignment asks that you develop your writing skills so that you can effectively argue your point of view. Ensure that each idea is substantiated with appropriate evidence, and that ideas are organised logically, and explained in well-developed paragraphs.
