Topic: Rehabilitation & Punishment of Criminals
Presentation Issue/Question: Do we have a moral obligation to rehabilitate or
punish criminals?
Following the Presentation Outline provided in the Ethical Research Presentation Guide, develop an outline for your presentation. Provide brief details about the summary of both sides of the topic, your opinion, conclusion, and relevant questions.
Your outline should be approximately 1-2 pages in length and should include the major points and arguments you intend to include in your presentation.
Your outline will automatically be evaluated through Turnitin when you submit your assignment in this activity. Turnitin is a service that checks your work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a database of web pages, student papers, and articles from academic books and publications. Ensure that your work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarized any material!
Your presentation must follow this outline:
Title Slide – This first slide must include the presentation title, your full name, and the date.
Body Slide- The next slides will contain an explanation and summary of both sides of the issue. Use your research to objectively (your opinion will come later) present the facts and opinions of both sides fairly. In your slides, cite (current APA format) the research you use, including citations. Your explanation and summaries should be in-depth, thus taking up several slides (should be 3+ slides). Use the notes section of the slide if you feel the slides are becoming crowded with too much text. Relate any principles, concepts, or information from your textbook into your presentation.
Reference Slide – This next slide must list all sources in the current APA format.
Opinion Slide – This next slide is your opinion. Present your own opinion about the controversy. You must explain why you believe what you do. Also, tie your opinion to one or more of the ethical approaches discussed in the textbook. State this ethical approach on the slide and explain why the approach is the right. Ex. “Utilitarian approach” focuses on consequences of abortion, more infant deaths vs. reduced back-alley deaths; deontology approach, does a fetus have rights vs. rights of mother; etc. Use the text or another professional source to support your stance. Be sure to properly cite your sources accordingly.
Conclusion and Discussion Questions Slide – Provide a summary of your presentation and close your presentation with three discussion questions about the topic. Think about these questions. Your questions must be ethically challenging and tough. You want your questions to really invoke a great deal of discussion.

HUMAN 125: Final chapter presentation

As you will notice, the chapters in our textbook become less authoritative and more fragmented as they deal with more contemporary eras. While time has allowed critics to reach some consensus on the originality and influence of practitioners from the early twentieth century, it is more difficult to discover patterns and lasting impact with more recent developments in the humanities. Consequently, our book is very tentative in discussing the present. The aim of this project is for you to speculate about which current practitioner might still merit mention in a humanities book fifty years from now.
In a minimum eleven-slide presentation, explore how a single practitioner of the humanities (primarily working post-1990s) has had a lasting impact on international culture. Explain how the artist (musician, director, writer, etc.), who should not be in the book already, employed his/her medium to offer a creative vision that innovated in both form and content. You are looking for someone who started trends rather than someone who followed them. Please remember that a practitioner of the humanities (an artist, musician, poet, architect, etc.) is different from a humanitarian (a philanthropist, someone who donates to charity)
How to proceed:
Decide what area of the humanities you want to concentrate on. You may tackle an area that the book does not discuss (e.g., fashion, video game design) in addition to those that it does (art, architecture, dance, film, literature, music, philosophy, photography, sculpture, theater, etc.)
Choose the presentation platform of your choice (e.g., Prezi, PowerPoint, YouTube video.) The class must be able to open and view your presentation for free.
List and define at least five criteria for inclusion in the book. What distinguishes the very best of your area from the merely good? Your criteria should include more than awards and popularity, neither of which guarantee that a figure will be remembered. Make sure that most of your criteria focus on the creative works themselves rather than on external factors such as philanthropy. Reading reviews and articles can help you determine what the professionals in your field consider to be crucial elements for your area of the humanities. Place these criteria on your first slide.
Determine which practitioner you want to lobby for. Choose a person who started working after 1990 and who is not already in the book. Remember that your individual must exemplify the criteria that you developed in step two. In your second slide, summarize this person’s accomplishments and explain why s/he is deserving of inclusion in the book. Apply the criteria from your first slide to your individual.
In slides three-six (one for each work), create a gallery containing four influential works by your individual. For instance, for an architect, you might include photographs or videos of the person’s most famous or innovative buildings, while for a musician you might use clips from the person’s best songs. Along with choosing the artifacts, you will also annotate them and explain what makes them superlative. In at least one paragraph, point out their significant features and explain why they are innovative and influential. You should focus on both aesthetic and thematic elements and should refer to your criteria.
On slides seven-eight, offer quotations praising your figure from at least four professional critics or practitioners. For instance, if you are lobbying for Quentin Tarantino, you might include quotations from Roger Ebert, Stephanie Zacharek, Oliver Stone, and Christopher Nolan. Include the source for each quotation. (Use MLA or APA in-text citation; works cited list should appear at the end of the presentation.) You may choose to divide this section into more than two slides.
On slides nine-ten, provide a list of four artists influenced by your figure. Annotate the list and explain the nature of the influence. Include the source for each person. (Use MLA or APA in-text citation; works cited list should appear at the end of the presentation.) Interviews are a great source for this kind of information. Your goal is to demonstrate that your person is innovative, not just talented or popular. If you have trouble finding people influenced by your figure, it may be a sign that your person is not yet significant enough to be in the book. You may choose to divide this section into more than two slides.
On slide eleven, include a works cited slide (use MLA or APA)

Presentations dealing with figures working mainly before the 1990s will lose 10%. Presentations dealing with figures not working in the humanities will lose 25%.

Plays are meant to be performed, rather than read. The purpose of dramatic arts often extends far beyond the words written on a page; staging, lighting, costumes intonation, expression, and audience experience are all part of the experience of a theatrical production. To develop your understanding of the cultural role of the dramatic arts, you will view a production of a play this week and write a reflection to explain your viewing experience. Choose a play that you would like to view and find a version online, YouTube, DVD or iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc. You can also choose to see a play live if you prefer.

Option 1: Write an analysis of the play that you viewed. Include at least one quote from the play in your essay. In your essay, address the following:
• Identify the performance that you have selected.
• Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play? You do not need to read the entire play, but you should skim the text.
• What type of mood and tone does the performance create? How?
• What parts of the play are easier to understand through performance? What are some details that stood out through performance?
• What are your feelings about this performance? What did you take away from viewing it?

This week you will read about architecture. The lesson includes information on Roman architecture, which was greatly influenced by the Greeks and Etruscans.
Locate at least two architectural works that were influenced by Greco-Roman architecture. These can be from any time period after the Greco-Roman period but should be from different periods themselves (e.g., one from Renaissance and one from Baroque). Then address the following:
What is the function of each structure?
How does each work exhibit influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?
How would you compare the two selected works? Take the role of the evaluative critic.
