Each respective section should begin with its own heading. Beneath the heading, include body paragraphs that answer the sub-topics for that section. Each section should be at least one page long, with 12-point font and double-spaced paragraphs.
Section 6, 7, 8: Identify three weaknesses that Pennsylvania possesses. As in the previous sections, these could be social, economic, environmental, or any other weakness that contributes negatively to population growth and gross state product.
Section 9: Address the question of whether modern-day Texas can learn any lessons from any the issues you examined in Sections 3-8. These lessons should be politically or economically impactful at a statewide level. Focus specifically on challenges that Texas faces between now and 2050. This section is subjective, which means that you will be required to form opinions which you will then justify. (I can’t get you any sections before 6 since my partner is still working on it. Just use the information that you have. The sections 3-5 are about positive aspects of Pennsylvania so do what you can with that)
Cite all sources used to produce your final product. Use APA formatting in conjunction with in-line citations. Remember that open collaborative reference works such as Wikipedia are highly discouraged as sources, because of their potential bias and elusive quality control mechanisms.

Students should offer evidence for their arguments. Thus, submissions that are more comprehensive and detailed will earn a higher point total. Each assignment should be a minimum of 750 words. Submissions must include a works cited page (note: there must be a parenthetical citation at the end of each sentence that contains information from a source). The textbook should be one of the sources and included on the works cited page (sources other than the textbook should be used as well).
You should use New Courier or Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spacing, and one-inch margins on all four sides of the paper. The assignment is to be formatted according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) style which includes a works cited page but does NOT include a title page. Students should research this style in order to properly format the assignment (see the Purdue Online Writing Lab).
All writing assignments will be analyzed using SafeAssign. Essays that contain plagiarized material will receive a significant reduction in points or a zero. Students may receive a failing grade in the course for submitting plagiarized material. Do not cut and paste information from an online source or copy information directly from the chapter without using quotations and citing the information.

Explain how the population has changed in Texas and how it is projected to change in the future. (Hint: Look at the charts and graphs in Chapter 1.) In what ways might Texas’ politics change in the future based on its racial and ethnic makeup? Based on the population growth, urbanization, and economic transformation of the last two decades, how might Texas change in the next two decades? Which areas will grow in population, and what might Texas’ government have to do to respond to that growth? (Be specific)).

After reading Chapter 4, review “Texas and the Nation: How Republican is Texas?”, which shows how Texas compares to other states in terms of how many residents identify as Republicans. Is Texas where you thought it would be on the graph? Why or why not? Recalling information from Chapter 1 on the changing demographics of Texas, how might the state’s position on the graph change over the next 20 years? With only 42% of Texas’s population identifying as Republicans, what explains Republicans holding all statewide offices and a majority of the Texas House, Texas Senate, and delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives?

According to Chapter 5 of the textbook, what are some of the historical and more recent barriers to voting in Texas? (Be specific) What accounts for the low level of voter participation in Texas? What can be done to increase voter participation? (Specifically, discuss at least two policy proposals that election officials could adopt.) After the 2020 election, state legislatures controlled by Republicans (including the Texas Legislature) have been debating and passing election reforms. Counties are in charge of administering elections in Texas. What were some of the proposed changes to election laws in Texas in 2021 and how would they impact a county’s ability to administer elections? Do you think these changes pose undue restrictions on the ability of Texans to vote?

What restrictions on the governor’s powers were proposed? What were the arguments for and against these restrictions? What happened to this proposal during the regular session? Do you believe that the governor exceeded his authority during the pandemic or do you believe the governor’s actions did not go far enough? Be sure to explain your position in detail.
2) According to “Who Governs Texas’ Cities?” in Chapter 10 of the textbook, which city council in Texas best reflects the racial/ethnic composition of its population? Explain how you came to this conclusion. Which city council diverges the most from its city’s population? Explain how you came to this conclusion. Do you think it is important that city councils reflect the racial/ethnic composition of their communities? Why or why not? Describe an issue a city might face where the racial/ethnic composition of the city council might matter in resolving that issue.
