Consider the following case study: You are a human service professional working with a single mother with three young children. She was recently evicted and has been living in her car and her children have not been attending school. a. Do you 1) refer her to child protective services with the recommendation that her children be taken into protective custody until she gets back on her feet, or 2) work with her in obtaining services so that she can regain stability without having her children removed? b. When explaining your chosen course of action discuss what variables might cause you to choose one or the other options? Be sure to include how would you assess the mental health and risk factors (including substance use)? Rate your interest in working with children on a scale of 1-10, stating one positive and one negative. Then, go to www.ted.com. Ted talks are well known for providing information on a wide variety of topics – all in around 18 minutes. Conduct a search for talks dealing with a childhood issue of your choice. This could be anything from learning disabilities, to mental health issues, to substance use, to foster care – anything concerning an issue which interests you and involves children (not teens – we study adolescents in the next module). Choose two of the talks and provide a summary of each, commenting on the history of the subject. Be sure to include links so others can view the videos. Scenario: After School Counts is a not-for-profit organization in a large urban city. The mission of the organization is to provide services for underserved youth in the community.
