The first half of the 20th century was without doubt the most catastrophic and cataclysmic fifty years in the history of humanity. Two world wars, regional conflicts, and civil wars across the globe led to death of over 200 million people and the destruction of not only millions of structures but also of governments, societies, and indeed entire nations. There is truly no way to quantify the loss of the individual human industry or the destruction to humanity as a whole. One can only imagine the inventions that were never invented, the art that was never created, the novels that were never written, or the ideas that never came to fruition, and ultimately the impact of that it could have had on the world.
With that said, while the loss created by these conflicts is immeasurable, the actual impact of these conflicts is not. Indeed, the crucible of these conflicts created the men and women who would become the leaders, scientists, artists, and intellectuals that would then create the modern world in which we live. In this essay, you will examine the lives of some of the architects of the modern world by examining the conditions that shaped them, how those conditions informed their world view, and the role they played in creating our world paradigm.
The Essay:
Examine the lives and experiences of a specific world leader and analyze how their experiences informed and guided their worldview and the role that understanding played in their particular shaping of the modern world. To fully answer this question, please craft your essay response in the following sections:
Section I – Introduce the world leader. Provide the reader with a brief biography of your world leader focusing specifically on their early life, upbringing, and education. Describe for the reader what informed your subjects worldview as a young person and what led them to follow the path they would choose in their future.
Section II – Examine the world leader during and after World War I. Provide the reader with an overview of the role your subject played in the First World War. Detail your subject’s actions during the war and consider how their experiences shaped them in their formative years. Describe for the reader how your subject used their war experience during the 1920s and to what end.
Section III – Examine the world leader in World War II. Provide the reader with a synopsis of the role your subject played in the 1930s and Second World War and the actions they took to accomplish their goals. Consider how their experiences during WWI and in the interwar period influenced both their goals and their methods during the second world war.
Section IV – Examine the world leader and their role in the post-war world. Provide the reader with an analysis of the sociological, economic, and/or political impact of your subject’s post-war actions/leadership. Consider how your subject’s experiences during the first half of the twentieth century influenced their actions as a social/political leader.
Section V – Conclude with the legacy of the world leader. Assert your position about the impact the world wars had on your subject, their worldview/leadership style, and what impact that played in creating post-war global dynamics. Conclude by asserting for the reader how you believe the world of the 1950s and 60s that your subject, and others like them, helped to create impacts the world as we understand it today.
The Format:
Essays should be doubled-spaced, size 12 font, with one-inch margins all around.
Essays must be a minimum of 4 page and should be a maximum of 6 pages (not including Cover page or Bibliography)
The essay should have a cover page as per Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.
Each page should include your name and a page number in the top right-hand corner of each page.
All in-text references to sources must be footnoted as per Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.
You must use at least two primary sources, two journal articles, a “Very Short Introduction” book, and the textbook.
All sources must be included in a bibliography as per Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.
