Instructions:
Your Alternative Assignment should be ORIGINAL. No direct quotes or inclusion of text from the article or third party sources will be accepted. Please be aware that if the text from the article or a third party source is accidentally or intentionally included in the Alternative Assignment without quotation marks, the UWF rules concerning plagiarism and associated penalties will apply.
Every submitted Alternative Assignment will be reviewed for plagiarism.
Each alternative assignment has a specific research article assigned to it. You must write a summary for the research article of the alternative assignment you sign up for – failure to write a response for the correct article will result in no credit being given.
Once you have found an alternative assignment that interests you, sign up for a timeslot in that particular Alternative Assignment. The article will be named after this study (i.e. “zAlternative Assignment:…”. Note: participating in the Alternative Assignment will exclude you from participation in the corresponding on-campus study and vice versa.
Step 2. Write an article summary for the article corresponding to the Alternative Assignment study you signed up for. Follow these guidelines when writing your papers:
1. Include a cover page that includes your full name, your instructor’s name, course number, reference number (check your syllabus!), the authors of the article, and the title of the article.
2. Two (2) typed, double-spaced pages, NOT including the cover page. Please use 12-pt standard font (e.g., Times New Roman) and 1 inch margins.
3. In the paper, you should address the following:
I. Introduction/Research Question
a. What is the problem the researcher(s) is/are addressing? What is the importance/practical implication of the research problem?
b. What have other researchers found regarding the research problem (include 1-2 examples)?
c. What are the author(s) hypotheses or expected results?
II. Methods/Procedure
a. Describe the procedure used in the experiment: Who were the participants and what were they asked to do?
b. What were the variables and how were they measured?
c. Do the variables/measurements used adequately address the author(s) research question? Why or why not?
III. Results/Conclusion. Note: you do not need to fully understand the results, focus on the big picture.
a. What were the main results? Did the findings support the hypotheses and purpose?
b. What are the implications of the results (in terms of our understanding of
psychology/people, or those affected by the problem, if any)?
c. What weaknesses or shortcomings of the research were discussed?
IV. Overall Assessment
2. What is your overall assessment of the study (touch on a few of the following): Was it well researched and conducted? Easy to read? Practical? Do you agree with the major points/premises? Did an idea/finding impress you, or was there something you found concerning about the results? Is this a topic you would read more about?
V. The paper must be written IN YOUR OWN WORDS. No direct quotes will be accepted. Any papers that use direct language from the article will receive NO ARGOPOINTS. Any other forms of academic misconduct such as resubmitting old essays for credit again or turning in someone else’s work as your own in order to obtain credit will not be accepted.
