Reporting t Test and Effect Size Results
Directions: Complete the assignment using the example as a guide.
Assignment:
Locate a Journal article using the ERIC database, or any report in which mean and standard deviation are reported. In a few sentences (provide sufficient detail for the reader), summarize the focus of the article or report, the sample and unit of measure, and the mean and standard deviation. You are to calculate and interpret the effect size. Remember to only interpret Cohen’s d (practical significance), not the r or “t” value which measures statistical significance.
If you do not use the correct terminology when interpreting Cohen’s d as noted in your readings, HALF CREDIT will be automatically deducted. The main focus of this assignment is to compute and interpret Cohen’s d and not confuse it with statistical significance.
*Note, if the article or report already calculated an effect size, locate another article. It is important for you to practice calculation and interpretation for your final project.
Be sure to reference your article using correct APA formatting!
Example:
O’Brian (2008) conducted a study to determine whether the use of manipulatives was more effective for teaching geometry concepts. One class received instruction with manipulatives, while the other received regular instruction. At the end of six weeks, test results indicated that the manipulatives-taught group gained higher scores on a test of geometry concepts. The manipulative group had a test mean of 90.1 (SD = 3.22), while the non-manipulative group had a test mean of 88.22 (SD = 5.3), t(48) = 2.13, p ≤ .05. d = 0.43. Cohen’s effect size value (d = 0.43) suggested only a moderate practical significance.
