Your final assignment will be a short 5 page paper (about 1250 words) or what I am calling a reflection. Your task is to apply concepts and ideas you have learned in this course to a migrant group. Don’t think of this as a full research paper but rather a foray or inroads into a topic related to your interests and the class material.
Choose a contemporary migrant group.
Once you have settled on a topic. I want you to address the following questions. Please include a references page at the end of your paper. Remember this paper is only about 5 page doubled spaces – you should only be spending 125 – 250 words on each prompt.
1. Make clear what SPECIFIC migrant group, time, and place you chose.
2. What is your interest in the specific migration you chose to investigate? Is it personal? Does your reason for choosing it have something to do with the course? (Example: This group describes my ancestors – I was fascinated by the idea of Chain Migration)
3. What are some of the push factors that influenced the group you chose? Why did they leave their place of origin? (Example: African Americans leave the South because of racism)
4. What were some of the pull factors in the United States. Once they left – why did they choose to go to the United States? (Example: African Americans came to the North because friends/relatives wrote letters and there were industrial jobs)
5. What theory of migration we covered earlier in the semester reading best fits your group? Explain why you chose the specific theory. (Example: Neo-Classical Migration)
6. What was/is the socio-economic status of this group? Highly educated? What type of jobs did they work when they came to the United States? What kind of visas would the group you are studying migrate under?
7. How does or did racism affect the migration and settlement patterns of the group you are studying?
8. What laws or legislations affected the group you are studying? (Example: The Chinese Exclusion Act affected Chinese settlements because male migrants could not bring women with them and they were forbidden by law to marry outside of their race)
9. What is the geographic pattern of the migrant group you are studying (east coast/west coast etc)? Has the geographic pattern of this migrant group changed over time?
10. Include and analyze any statistics you can gather from past applications we have used in the course that make sense.
11. What are issues facing the immigrant group you chose?
12. Include a conclusion
