For this assignment, you again will act as the anthropologist! To do so, watch a late-night (or day-time) talk show interview. It can be an interview from any show you’d like – but make sure it’s at least 6 or 7 minutes long and that it’s an interview between a talk show host and a guest.
As you watch the interview, make two sets of notes: one for spoken language and one for kinesics.
Instructions: For Assignment 4, please answer each of the following questions based on your notes:
How do the host and guest speak to each other? (Is their language more formal or informal? Do they use certain words or phrases that stand out to you as slang or as dialectically different?) In addition, what kinds of class, gender, and/or power dynamics are suggested by the language they use?
What is the body language of the interviewer? Of the guest? What kind of relationship is displayed by the language they are using? Does their body language represent the same level of formality or informality as their language?
What might a future anthropologist conclude about Americans in the 21st century if they were using this interview to study a “lost language” and an ancient society?
Make sure to answer each of the above questions to receive full credit.
