How can Protein Synthesis and mRNA be used to help us?
These concepts are not just theoretical- they are being used today to make therapeutics and vaccines against Covid-19, and try and figure out who is most likely to get very ill (and a lot of other things!)
The first 2 released vaccines are based on mRNA, and you can read explanations about how those work right here- this paper is big on biology, so be sure to bring anthropological concepts into it as you work.

Expected paper segments- description and points- this is how you will be scored:
10 points Introduction/Formatting
You should include a title page, your paper should be left-justified, and you should use MLA or ALA format for this paper.

7 points: meets minimum, needed proofing or some instructions not followed.
6 points: does not meet standards, though the attempt was made to do so.
below this will be ‘0’
40 points-Introduction to the Research/Current State of the Research.
Review and summarize major work done in the field of study. This should be source-heavy.
Scoring will be as follows:
40 points: completely covered, well done! Good sourcing and choices on sources, too!
37 points: ‘A’-level work, clear introduction, good sources, and good choices on researchers and projects to discuss.
34 points: ‘B’-level work, well-done, but more detail or coverage may have been in order, a source may be weak.
30 points: ‘C’-level work, needed proofing, some of the material could use more elaboration, or factual errors are present.
24 points: incomplete or instructions not followed. Sources may be weak or lacking.
below this will be a ‘0’
40 points- Opposing Viewpoints in the field of research
compare and contrast 2 opposing researchers- why do they oppose each other?
Which of them do you agree with?
This segment should be well-sourced.
Scoring will be as follows:
40 points: completely covered, well done! Clear understanding of the opposing viewpoints presented, and a good argument made for the choice you made on your opinion.
37 points: ‘A’-level work, clear introduction, good sources, and good choices on researchers and their viewpoints. You viewpoint is well-articulated.
34 points: ‘B’-level work, well-done, but more detail or coverage may have been in order. Your viewpoint may be a bit unclear.
30 points: ‘C’-level work, needed proofing, some of the material could use more elaboration, or factual errors are present. A viewpoint may not be expressed, or may not be fully supported.
24 points: incomplete or instructions not followed. Sources may be lacking.
below this will be a ‘0’
40 points-Description of Further Research Needed/Research Question and Research Plan
Sources not required here- this is your research plan.
If offered a grant to continue the research, what should be done and how would you do it?
scoring will be as follows:
40 points: completely covered, well done! Clear understanding of the needs for future research, and your plan is worthy of funding unchanged!
37 points: ‘A’-level work, you have presented a clear and well-considered plan, and I would fund you- with perhaps a little bit of adjusting.
34 points: ‘B’-level work, well-done, a solid foundation to build on. I might not vote to fund you yet, but would certainly consider a future grant submission with some changes to the plan.
30 points: ‘C’-level work, while you have a plan that might eventually be applied, it needs more work to make it viable for approval.
24 points: incomplete or instructions not followed. A grant organization would not vote to fund this, though they may encourage you to keep working on your plan
below this will be a ‘0’. the material was not covered, there is no plan, or the plan is not acceptable based on what was covered in the course.
20 points-Short Story:
a brief fictionalized account of some aspect of the research, for example, if researching King Tutankhamun’s mummification, I might write a brief description of his funeral from the point of view of his wife.
This should be about 100 words.
no sources required here- this is scored as follows:
20 points: Great! The story is here, it is not too short or too long, and the facts in the tory are all supported by the rest of your paper!
17 points: Good story here! You may have strayed a bit from the facts, but you clearly understand your topic and can express details about it in this format. Length is acceptable.
15 points: The story is here, and it meets the requirements in its factual information and the length.
13 points: Facts do not match the research material, or length is incorrect. Below minimum requirements.
Below this will be a ‘0’ – there may be no segment that covers this, or it may not be on topic.
