Assignment Description
In the case study of Pat Tomas (linked in the Resources), you will evaluate the client issues and the social worker’s professional and clinical work. In addition, you will have the opportunity to engage in critical analysis of advanced social work practice, knowledge, values, and skills; leadership and technology in practice; skills to promote diversity and difference; cultural competence; and ethical considerations in a client-social worker initial session. The knowledge you gained from your Unit 4 assignment can be used to review and analyze this unit’s case study.
Assignment Instructions
Review the case study about Pat Thomas provided for this unit. Please read the case at least twice. In reading the case, apply the knowledge gained from your Cultural Competence course (SWK5012), the NASW Code of Ethics, and the NASW Standards for Technology.
Next, carefully evaluate the social worker’s professional demeanor, the ethical practices employed, and the professional judgment used to promote social, economic, and environmental justice. As you critically read the case, consider the community committee as stakeholders, the experience of the social worker and his role on the community committee, the issues the case poses to the community, the client’s identified concerns, and the background of the client (for example, the diagnosis, the issues associated with the diagnosis, the age of the client, the family history, the school and home concerns, the language used by the client, and self-determination of the client). Also, review the NASW Code of Ethics.
After reviewing the case, complete the provided Youth Crime Case Study Form (linked in the Resources). Make sure to use complete sentences, reference content from the case, and research the client’s diagnosis, conduct disorder, and evidence-based practice interventions in the Capella library as needed to inform your responses. For example, understanding the behaviors associated with the diagnosis of conduct disorder can be beneficial in your assessment of the client’s needs.
In preparing to complete the Youth Crime Case Study Form, include the following:
Provide the client identifying information. (Identifying information is anything that you might use as a descriptor for a person. This can include age, race, gender, height, weight, hair color, hair length, eye color, build, gait, and any other observable characteristics.)
Provide the client history. (Summarize the personal history of the client. This includes relationship/marital status, children, living situation, medical history, educational background, sexual orientation, military service, occupation, and any other pertinent personal history. Also include family history of the client, including mental health history.)
Describe the problem. (Consider the disorder and other potentially relevant issues presented in the case. Research the disorder and any other potential factors and add at least two citations to support your description of the disorder and other identified factors to consider.)
Briefly discuss your professional demeanor as the social worker. Next, give one example of how you would exhibit a professional demeanor with this client as a social work intern.
As the social worker, examine the technology used in the case. Discuss how you would use the NASW Standards for Technology to ensure ethical practices when conducting a client interview when a face-to-face meeting is not an option. Be sure to reference the section of the standard that supports your response.
Review the NASW Code of Ethics. Explain how your professional judgment as an emerging advanced generalist social worker can promote social, economic, and environmental justice for this client.
Identify the leadership skills and social work practice skills you used as the social worker in the case. Discuss a leadership skill and a social work skill you would use to become aware of the background of the client (for example, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, family history, educational background) that differs from your own.
Assume that you, as the social worker, have at least one difference from your client. This can include ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, and so forth. Share one example of how you would engage the client to understand differences (between you and the client) to promote the client’s well-being from a strengths-based perspective.
How does your self-awareness and understanding of difference promote social, economic, and environmental justice as a social work intern?
In the case there are several stakeholders. List the names and job titles of two stakeholders. As the social worker, discuss how you may use the stakeholders to promote social, economic, and environmental justice for the client.
