Consider Shakespeare’s play through a critical lens of your choice. I ask that you avoid a strictly formalist approach to the play (i.e. close reading, explication) and instead consider some elements that might be considered extra-textual (i.e. outside the text). Examples of approaches that lend themselves well to interpreting this particular play include mythological criticism (with attention to mythological references and allusions as well as to Shakespeare’s source material for the play); ecocriticism (with attention to the contrasts between the “rules’ of Oberon’s and Theseus’ realms, country, and courtly life, etc.); critical race theory (with attention to the contrasts between people from Athens such as Theseus and Egeus and people of different ethnicities and nationalities such as Hippolyta and the “Indian boy”.
Of course, you’ll need to do some research and include an appropriate number of sources.
