Merton’s Typology in Pop Culture.
In chapter 4, the authors discuss Merton’s ideas about the five ways that individuals adapt to anomie/strain: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism and rebellion. Four of these allow for the possibility of deviance.
For this week’s discussion, after reading the chapter, please identify a pop culture character who fits into one of Merton’s deviant typologies (i.e., not a conformist). This could be a character from a movie or TV show, a politician or other public figure, or perhaps an artist or musician. Explain in a paragraph or so who the person/character is and how they illustrate one of Merton’s types in their relationship to accepting or rejecting society’s goals and means.
