Final project overview
One of the hopes for this course is that you will be able to take what you learn and apply it to your everyday life. Writing skills are certainly important to develop; however, your everyday life probably does not consist of writing essays and research proposals. Therefore, this final project is a different kind of writing assignment.
You have three choices so you can focus on your own personal strengths and interests. You can choose between these options (more information on these options is included in the attachment below):
Option 1: A letter to a legislator
Option 2: An op-ed
Option 3: A written speech for a presentation
The goal of your assignment is to take a stance on an issue relevant to the Alcohol in Society course material, and create a persuasive message in one of the forms above. This type of writing is typically more widely disseminated than a typical paper you’d write for class. It is important that you keep your target audience in mind (rather than just your instructor and TA!) Although I know this level of freedom can initially be even more difficult, the goal is for you to write something in a style you feel comfortable with about a topic you are passionate about.
