You are a staffer for a state or U.S. representative (you decide at what level; you must identify the title of the elected official at the top of your submitted memo) and your boss – the elected official – has decided that they would like to develop a piece of legislation to address a public health issue that you two had briefly chatted about in between meetings last week. Your boss asks you to put together a policy memo no more than 1,500 words in length.
Thoroughly research the public health issue and provide an analysis of the major regulatory, organizational, structural, social, and economic factors contributing to the public health problem, noting any racial, gender, ethnic, socioeconomic, or other inequities in how the issue presents. Your memo should include specific information on how the components (e.g., funding, regulations, standards) of the proposed policy target the causes of the public health issue. Take a stance on one side of that policy in hopes to persuade an elected official to push it forward.
Be mindful of your audience when selecting sources – an elected official must rely only on quality information from peer-reviewed or other reputable sources. Please include an additional page of all sources used to inform your memo (not all need to be cited in your memo, but please properly cite when appropriate) using in APA format
