as a structural civil engineer select 2 practices from below. We want to use these ideas to make A building at Penn State Harrisburg called Olmstead LEED-certified. select the 2 practices from below and provide a full review of what they are, how they work, and how they are considered sustainable practices to help PSH. Note: no design (sizing, cost estimate etc) is needed.
Here are the practices.
Public Electric Transport: Campuses, particularly big campuses, can invest in public electric
transport to reduce the use of private vehicles. Although this technology requires a higher
capital cost, it offers significant economic and environmental benefits because of reduced
maintenance, use of alternative power, and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
 Plastic Recycling Facilities: Aside from discouraging single-use plastic, the campus can also
invest in plastic recycling facilities. The campus can set up more recycling bins and partner with
recycling facilities to recycle plastics collected from students, faculties, and other staff.
 LED Lights: Traditional lights should be replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting. LED lights
reduce energy consumption by 40%, which can help the campus save on energy costs.
 Solar Power: The campus should also start investing in renewable energy sources. Solar panels
can be installed in different areas on campus to make sustainable energy cheaper and more
accessible. Although the installation requires a budget, it brings more benefits, like a constant
source of renewable energy.
 Carbon Capture and Storage: Instead of focusing on completely decarbonizing the campus, the
campus can develop a system that safely captures carbon emissions and permanently store
them. By storing carbon emissions, they no longer contribute to damaging the environment.
