Reading Notes
Students are expected to submit four responses to assigned readings (one for each of the assigned books, plus one on Islamic law readings). The response should take no more than a single page (double-spaced, size 12 font).
Reading notes are assessed by pass/fail grading: the assignment either meets expectations or it does not (either it’s a 10 or a 0). A successful reading note follows course instructions and adheres to the template below:
1. Main Idea: in as close to one sentence as possible, explain the big point of the reading. What is the author trying to explain/prove?
—Give me more than simply saying the topic of the reading. Tell me what the author is doing.
2. Evidence/methodology: how does the author prove her/his argument?
—what are the author’s sources?
3. Quote (properly attributed and cited): use the author’s own words to illustrate the main or secondary points of the reading.
—In as close to one sentence as possible, explain the quote’s significance (how does it convey the author’s main idea?)
4. New Terms/Concepts (if applicable): did the article introduce or draw upon unfamiliar terms or
concepts?
5. Critique: Give an example of something that you found problematic in the reading, or something that the author could have done differently.
6. Conclusions: observations, informed reflections, connections between this reading and other course materials?
