Confucianism is an old system of thought. Over two-thousand years old in fact! Given its
age—and given its original home in the Ancient Chinese world—someone might well think
that Confucianism is not relevant to contemporary Western life. Your job in this paper is to (a)
pick an element of Confucianism and explain it and then (b) argue that it is still relevant to
contemporary Western life.
For (a), you should state and explain the element of Confucianism that you will argue is still
relevant to contemporary Western life. An “an “Excellent” paper will include textual
reference(s) in this section as well as provide an example to make the aspect of Confucianism
you’re discussing as clear as possible
For (b), you should provide a clear reason why this aspect of Confucian is relevant to
contemporary Western life. An “Excellent” paper will also provide a reason why someone
*might think* that this element of Confucianism isn’t still relevant to contemporary Western
life and then say what’s wrong with that reason. Note that this reason should be specific to
the particular element of Confucianism that you’re discussing. For example, don’t provide
“Confucianism is old” as your reason for why someone might think that this part of
Confucianism isn’t still relevant. After all, that reason applies to every other element of
Confucianism!
(a) will correspond the Explanation part of the rubric; (b) will correspond to the Argument
section.
Include a thesis statement near the start of your paper in which you preview and
summarize what you will say in both sections of the paper. You’re free to use several
sentences for your thesis. Your paper should be explicit and clear throughout. The reader
shouldn’t have to guess at what you mean or fill in any blanks. Also make sure you’re going
into sufficient detail. A great way to increase the clarity of your paper is to use examples.
As far as organization, your paper will naturally fall into two parts: the first part should
explain the element of Confucianism you’ll be discussing; the second part should argue that
this element of Confucianism is relevant to contemporary Western life.
As far as length and formatting, your paper should be 3 pages double spaced. It can be
longer if there’s a good reason for it to be. Though I don’t recommend that you use them,
any and all outside sources must be clearly cited.

Here are instructions to help you in writing your essay responses. Your essay response is meant to be short. In other words, your response should be around 6-7 sentences. Keep it short, succinct, and make it clear that you have answered the question.

In your paper, I want you to explore the following question: why is solitude necessary for living a good life? You should first consider and define Kethledge’s main thesis in his talk. Following this, you should then explore why solitude is needed in order for human beings to flourish.

Your essay response should be no more than 700-800 words. This is the ONLY requirement, no need for complicated formatting!

In this unit, you read about the major philosophical tenets that shape Buddhist beliefs about samsara, karma, and enlightenment. Also, you learned that there are three schools of Buddhism, each with its own interpretation of the Buddha’s teaching.
<
To demonstrate your grasp of these ideas, you will develop an essay that includes the following components:
<
Explanation of the core tenets of Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Vajrayana Buddhism particularly with respect to how one attains enlightenment.
<
Explanation of why the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path are important to Buddhism.
<
Make sure that each branch, Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, has its own paragraph. Also, make sure that your essay includes an introductory paragraph with a clearly defined thesis statement and a concluding paragraph in which you will summarize your paper’s argument. Your essay should be at least two pages in length. You must include at least one outside source, which can be your textbook. “the human soul is capable of an operation per se immaterial”

Here is a simplified version of the classical argument for the incorruptibility (that is, for the immortality) of the human soul presented by St. Thomas:

M. What is capable of an operation per se immaterial cannot be corrupted.
m. The human soul is capable of an operation per se immaterial.
C. Therefore, the human soul cannot be corrupted.
(Where “operation per se immaterial” means “an operation that cannot be effected through the body” and “to be corrupted” means “to cease to be what it is, to pass away.”)

This is a CESARE syllogism. Thus, if the premises are true the conclusion follows necessarily.

For our second paper, we will focus on the minor premise (namely, “the human soul is capable of an operation per se immaterial”). Two of St. Thomas’s arguments for that minor premise can be found in Summa Theologiae I, q. 75, a. 2 and Summa Theologiae I, q. 75, a. 5. (See the ‘Philosophy of the Human Person’ manual for these texts.)

You must write a paper about three pages long in which you explain at least one of the arguments presented by St. Thomas in favor of the minor premise in question, namely, that the human soul is capable of an operation per se immaterial (that is, an operation which cannot be effected through the body/matter).

To do that well, I strongly recommend reading not only the relevant passages from the Summa but also the “auxiliary texts” available on BB (see “Course Materials => Philosophy of Human Person”) and the “supplements” to ST I.75.2 and ST I.75.5 in the manual. If you think the argument is flawed or have any sort of objections against it, you can include these objections in your last paragraph(s), but your paper must be primarily about explaining at least one of the arguments.

Papers must be submitted through Blackboard (.pdf or .docx), not through email. Late papers will not be accepted without a justified reason. Your paper will be verified with an anti-plagiarism tool. Plagiarism will result in failing the assignment or the course.

What you’re reviewing is plato 1.docx.
The feedback I got was…
“If you want to improve, add a separate introductory paragraph first.
Then, I would suggest revising especially by paying attention to language. I cant fix all your grammatical mistakes for you, so you have to try to improve your writing on your own. You can spend more time explaining your points, making it easier for the reader.”
You must identify an argument by referring to its conclusion. You must state how many premises it contains. You must explain each premise, step-by-step. Each premise should be quoted, not just summarized. No more than 1 premise per paragraph. Then, you must apply the terminology from chapters 1-3 from the textbook to the argument. Please before everything else read ESSAY OUTLINE. CHAPTER 1-3 are vocabulary that you have to use and apply.
