• Explain four specific small group communication weaknesses/problems and
provide examples from the film. You should state a specific group principle
that is being practiced, overlooked, or “violated.” Use specific textbook
terminology to state your weaknesses. Use the bold feature to highlight your
terms/concepts and cite the page number from the text in parenthesis (as
discussed previously). For example, you might write, “This incident clearly
illustrates groupthink (p. 167).” State enough about the principle to show you
comprehend it and then offer your support from the film to demonstrate your
point.
• Each weakness should be its own paragraph. Integrate your suggestions for
improvements with each weakness. Provide at least one suggestion for
each weakness regarding how the communication could be enhanced. For
all suggestions, use textbook terminology and cite the page number from the
text in parenthesis.
• Do not simply offer the reverse of the concept for your suggestion. For
instance, if you argue that a group is engaging in groupthink, an
unacceptable suggestion would be to state that the group should simply not
engage in groupthink. Instead, you might suggest that the group elect a
devil’s advocate. Follow this sentence by explaining what a devil’s
advocate is, and make specific suggestions from the course material that
shows your ability to apply the material. This is usually the most
challenging part of the assignment. Do not treat this portion of the
assignment lightly, as it is important in demonstrating an understanding and
application of course concepts.

Discussion Question
Late postings will not be accepted. Postings will be graded based on academic relevance and must display some analytical ability and the criteria for grading your discussions in D2L (Discussion Grading Rubric). Postings that essentially are “verbal nods” to another’s postings (ie. “Suzanne, I totally agree with you!”) are ineffective and not appropriate. It is also ineffective to purely quote from the text—we are all reading the same materials; effective and appropriate deployment of course concepts/terms within context demonstrates comprehension and engagement.
