In The Time Of The Butterflies (novel)
Topic: Choose a short story, poem, play, novel or film and discuss how symbolism and characterization contribute to its theme.
Thesis: The Mirabel sisters show importance of women in their culture at the time and help each other find the courage within themselves to take control of their lives and leading the resistance against their dictator, showing us the human cost of political oppression
Research paper: The body of the paper must be seven-ten pages in length. This excludes the outline, title page and appended matter, including “Notes” (endnotes). Although it may be informative, the primary purpose of the paper is persuasive. Therefore, you should clearly state your position regarding the short story, poem, play, novel or film and support that position with your research. It is expected that the information presented will demonstrate your ability to evaluate a literary work and your knowledge of literary terms and methods of analysis discussed in class.
The outline should be a topic outline. It should appear after the title page and must include your thesis statement. (Sample format is on the class web site.)
The paper should include a one to two page biography of the author to help the reader understand the social, historical, and political context of the period in which the work was written.
The body of the paper must include at least four citations from secondary sources–two citations from two different journals, newspapers or periodicals and two citations from books other than the original or primary source. In addition, the essay should include at least four quotations. (There should be at least eight citations in total.) The short story, poem, play, novel or film you choose is your primary source and presumably will be cited in your paper.
Endnotes are only to be used to provide supplemental information. Do not use footnotes.
The Works Cited must indicate that you have used a minimum of seven sources for your research. Your sources should include at least three journal or periodical articles. Any source material from the Internet must be approved prior to use. The work being discussed is your primary source and you should consult at least six other sources. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source.
The final paper should include all components. The research paper must include an outline, body and Works Cited
Format: . It must be typed and double spaced using a 12 point Times New Roman or Arial font. A title page is not necessary, but the first page of the paper should follow MLA style and include your name, class, Dr. Roliston, and the date in the upper left corner of the page. The title should be centered in the middle of the page, and the pages must include MLA headers.

For this assessment, you will demonstrate your ability to write a formal academic essay that uses appropriately formal 3rd person language and that demonstrates your ability to establish and support a clear main point or thesis about a topic. You will also demonstrate your ability to paraphrase, incorporate, and cite relevant and reliable research information to support the ideas within your paper. You will be writing to and for an educated, academic audience.Select a specific, relevant, researchable, and relatively recent change in your field of study. The change can be a positive or negative change, but it must be a change that has already occurred, rather than a change you would like to see happen. For example, one change in the field of education is the increase in the use of standardized testing; one change in the field of law enforcement is the increased use of police body cameras. Then, establish a main point about this change, analyzing either why this change occurred or what effects it has had on a particular group or on the field of study itself (for example, what has the increased use of body cameras had on police officers’ relationship with the community). You should not argue for a change to occur, nor should you take a position in favor or against this change, nor should you offer a solution to a problem. Your goal is to objectively analyze the causes or already demonstrated effects of this change.
You must incorporate 3–4 relevant and reliable, peer-reviewed secondary sources and demonstrate the ability to paraphrase. Your Assessment must also give credit to the sources using APA format style expectations. Your submission should be 5–6 paragraphs long, or around 750–850 words.

Discussion 6.1: Choose one poem as your favorite rendering from the three translations of Sonnet I (“He Confesses…”) and explain why you prefer your chosen version over the other two. Also, do the differing translations affect the meaning of the poem in a significant way?

Discussion 7.1: What do you think Spenser’s intent was in creating such a wide-ranging allegorical tale? Why did he identify The Faerie Queene as an allegory and not simply create an epic poem, leaving others to discern his meaning?

Discussion 8.1:Consider how mental illness is viewed in society today and how Don Quixote’s madness is portrayed in the novel. Is he really “mad,” in your opinion? Would people today react the same as the characters in the story? What would happen to a modern-day Don Quixote? How would modern-day people react to such a person? Are there examples in literature or film from the last thirty years that approach this subject in a similar way?

Discussion 9.1: Shakespeare’s sonnets have stood over time as arguably some of the greatest poetry ever written. The sonnets have a particular structure that is based in meter or timing of beats per line. Consider Hip-Hop verse, with or without music…does it have the same longevity potential? Do you think we will be reading “classical” Hip-Hop verse in 400 years? Which artists do you believe will endure? Which rap verses or songs will be in that canon?

Think about how the characterization of the love relationships between Beatrice/Benedick, Hero/Claudio.
Both tell us something different about love and about how relationships should or should not work. Both also give us different and interesting images of women. Discuss these relationships and images and how Branagh accommodates them in his film version of the play. What changes reflect a modern sensibility about the relationships between men and women? You might also consider the challenges inherent in bringing a 400- year- old play to film and how we as a 21st century audience find value in the “story”?
