1 : The last cartridges (Alphonse de Neuville, 1873)
– Context: On September 1, 1870, during the battle of Bazeilles near Sedan, Commander Lambert’s marine troops, entrenched in an inn, La Maison Bourgerie, stood up to a regiment of Bavarians. Surrounded, the French fought to the last cartridge. Of the fifty or so marsouins (=marine infantrymen) entrenched, only fifteen were able to surrender to the enemy. The next day, Napoleon III capitulated in Sedan.
At the end of the conflict, France lost Alsace and Lorraine.
The work was often reproduced. It also inspired Emile Zola for an episode of his novel La Débâcle (1892), dedicated to the defeat of 1870. Georges Méliès and the Lumière brothers also made short films from it. A play was also made from it.
De Neuville was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in June 1881.
2. The victory parade in front of the Arc de Triomphe, July 14, 1919 (François Flameng, 1919)
In 1918, France was victorious at the end of the First World War and recovered the regions lost during the previous conflict with Germany.
Even before the First World War, François Flameng was honorary president of the Society of French Military Painters. In 1914, he was one of the first painters to join the military missions.
