You are a caseworker in a community mental health facility. Your client is a twenty-one-year-old female who reports that she constantly feels like she is worthless. She has had a series of dysfunctional relationships with guys. She feels as if she does not deserve to find someone who will treat her decent. She has also had a number of health problems that cause her to feel bad about herself. These health problems have caused her to drop out of school, and she is unable to hold a job. The subject frequently has self-defeating thoughts. Your task is to work with your client to devise a single-subject design. CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS Based on the case scenario just outlined, answer the following questions: 1.What key words would you use in a literature review to design an intervention for your client? 2.What type of single-subject design would you implement? Give your reasons for choosing this particular design. 3.What would be the target behavior that you would try to intervene upon? 4.How would you operationalize the target behavior? 5.What would be the number of baseline observations? 6.What would be the number of observations (post intervention)?

“Groups offer a number of advantages over individual or other counseling methods including creating a sense of universality or the understanding that clients are not alone in their struggles” (Yalom & Lesczc, 2005).
The use of group treatment in treatment recovery centers is often the primary mode of treatment and offers a number of advantages. Clients undergoing individual treatment may not receive the necessary support or feedback from individuals who have gone through similar situations who might help in the recovery process (Cuizon, 2009).
Building a support network of professionals, peers, and family members is fundamental when building a solid relapse prevention plan. Creating a support network and maintaining it may provide the best long-term results. Prevention programs are most often conducted in a group setting when clients are developing effective strategies for recovery (Weiss, Jaffee, de Menil, & Cogley, 2004). Addiction is also a disease of isolation, so group support has a fundamental function of making the addiction public and requiring people with problems with addiction to become more accountable for choices that they make in persisting with destructive and addictive behaviors.
For this Discussion, review this week’s resources. Consider the role that groups and communities might play in addiction recovery and possible ways in which societal interactions might help an individual in recovery maintain sobriety. In addition, think about your own views concerning society’s obligations toward individuals suffering from addiction.
Post your position on whether society has an obligation to help individuals with addiction. Explain why and how. Then explain three ways that community support or a group approach may assist in the recovery of clients with problems with addiction. Support your response using the resources and current literature.

Clinical supervision is not only needed in the early stages of a career, but is often beneficial if used throughout a career. It is important to understand that clinical supervision is a healthy aspect of clinical work and not an indication of lack of knowledge. No matter how good an addiction professional you are, it is important to consult and connect with other professionals about cases.
For this Discussion, read this week’s resources and explore benefits of clinical supervision in addiction treatment and consider how supervision might change over a counselor’s career.
Post a description of two benefits of receiving clinical supervision throughout your career as an addiction professional. Then explain how that supervision might change over the addiction professional’s career. Support your response using the resources and the current literature.

As an addiction professional, you may contribute to social change in a variety of ways. For example, you may educate clients and families, engage in local community and political agendas to help those in need, and connect with other professionals in the field across the city, state, or nation. In addition, you might work to limit social agendas that may potentially hurt clients, families, and communities at large.
Individuals, groups, governments, school systems and communities aim to advocate for people in need through the use of social programs. For example, the Drug Abuse Awareness and Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program designed by Nancy Reagan in the 1980s was a social program with the goal of keeping kids away from alcohol and drugs. This program was used in nearly 80% of school districts in the United States where police officers were tasked with educating school-aged children about the dangers of using alcohol and drugs. Unfortunately, despite the best of intentions, some social change programs are ineffective and fail to accomplish what they set out to do. D.A.R.E. has reportedly been ineffective and was sometimes shown to be counterproductive (Hanson, n. d.).
For this Discussion, review this week’s resources and select one of the social change programs identified below. Consider the challenges facing social change programs and think about factors that may contribute to the success of these programs in today’s society.
Select a social change program from the list provided and complete research on the topic for Discussion:
Just Say No
War on Drugs
World Health Organization on Addiction
Post a description of the prevention program that you selected and explain why it was not successful in preventing addiction. Then based on this information, what two recommendations would you make for this program to be successful in reducing addiction today? Finally, describe two challenges to those recommendations. Support your response using the resources and the current literature.

Addiction treatment is a demanding profession that often involves high levels of stress. Without appropriate treatment, addiction professionals may fall prey to burnout, lack of compassion, and fatigue, leaving them unable to treat clients effectively. It is important for addiction treatment professionals to seek out support from clinical supervisors, connect with other addiction professionals, and implement self-care practices. Although addiction professionals are certainly not expected to be perfect, awareness of personal and professional stressors may greatly improve their ability to sustain long-term interest and productivity in their careers.
Self-care for mental health professionals is vital. The ability to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually is important if you are to be of service to others. To assist in this process, it is helpful to develop a self-care plan. The key is to get help when needed and to address issues when they arise.
For this Discussion, review this week’s resources and the media entitled, ” A Day in the Life of an Addiction Counselor” and create a long-term self-care plan. Support your response with references to the resources and current literature.
Post a description of your long-term self-care plan. Explain steps that you might take to prevent burnout. Explain what work/life balance means to you and steps that you might take to achieve a healthy work/life balance. Explain steps that you might take to maintain physical health.

Addictions professionals are in a unique position in that they must maintain confidentiality while possessing exclusive knowledge about behavior that may result in injury. How do they balance these conflicting priorities? Under special protection, addictions professionals have the duty to warn and protect if they become aware clients are acting in a way in which their addiction may harm themselves or others. Understanding your legal and ethical obligations and the resulting social consequences is essential when working with an impaired individual whose decisions may have life or death consequences for others.
For this Discussion, review this week’s resources as well as the ones that you find in the Walden Library and reputable sources on the Internet. Reflect on different situations in which “duty to warn and protect” laws apply in your state. Select a duty to warn and protect law that applies to your role as an addiction professional in the community. Consider why your selected law is important.
Post a summary of the duty to warn and protect law in your state. Then explain issues or events that necessitated the creation of the law. Be specific and provide examples to support your response. Additionally, describe either an addendum that would strengthen the existing law or a new law that you would create and enact to further protect the rights of clients impaired by addictions. What inequity or limitation are you attempting to address? What outcomes would you like to see if your law passed? Support your response using the resources and the current literature.
