Choosing a single film for a detailed case study, critically analyse how at least two of the following themes were central to its becoming ‘popular’: film style; marketing and publicity; stars; genre; authorship.You are welcome to select either a classical Hollywood or post-classical or contemporary Hollywood film, or a film from another popular global cinema context, just as long as you are able to situate it productively and appropriately within your discussion of ‘popular film’.
Your discussion should include: reference to appropriate scholarly reading; close textual analysis (ie detailed discussion of specific sequences with attention to film language); attention to the film’s reception.
This assignment is designed so that you may select your own choice of apt case study film – you are very welcome to run your choice past me before you commence work.
Note this essay is 3,000 words. The word count excludes your Bibliography and Filmography. Therefore essays within a margin of 2,700 – 3,300 words are acceptable.
And don’t forget the golden rule with this assignment – that your task is not to write a review or evaluation of why a particular film is ‘good’ or ‘great’!
