TYPE CLASSIFICATION POSTERS
STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR TYPE CLASSIFICATIONS
Choose 1 type classification from each of the lists below. This will result in a total of 3 posters.
LIST 1 – Old Style, Transitional Serif, Modern, Slab Serif
LIST 2 – Neo-Grotesque, Humanist Sans Serif, Geometric Sans Serif
LIST 3 – Script, Decorative, Blackletter
STEP 2: CHOOSE TYPEFACES
Once type classifications have been chosen, begin researching through the type database
to determine which specific typefaces you will use for each classification.
STEP 3: RESEARCH TYPEFACES AND CLASSIFICATIONS
Once your typefaces have been chosen, write a two page essay that highlights a variety of
facts revolving around your typefaces. Talk about the history or origin of each typeface, speak
about the typographers or companies who designed them, include information about the
type classification itself, describe the nuances of the letterforms, etc… Parts of this essay will
be included within your actual poster design.
STEP 4: DESIGN POSTERS
Once steps 1, 2 and 3 have been completed, work on developing a creative and engaging
typographic solution for each poster. Utilize the facts and keywords you found through your
research to create strong connections between type and content. This is what will ultimately
make your posters memorable.
• Poster dimensions should be 11” x 14”
• Each poster must contain a paragraph (minimum 4-5 sentences) from the essay
STEP 5: CREATE PRESS QUALITY PDFs
Once designs are complete, create a press quality PDF of each poster for critique.
