Develop a treatment plan for the patient. Create a short presentation (Max 5 min) in which you will explain to the patient how the two therapies work, potential side effects and complications and scientific evidence for how well the therapy works.
Your treatment regime will be first line traditional chemotherapy and your second line therapy will be based on the tumor profile of the patient and should include the following elements.
Research and identify a first line traditional chemotherapy (e.g. Taxol or cisplatin) for the specific cancer the patient has. Explain how this treatment would work and potential complications and side effects. These treatments are usually based on the organ where the tumor occurs and not the genetic profile of the patient. Generally, these treatments are administered as a combination of two or more drugs. Explain to the patient why this is the case.
Using the genomic findings in the patient reports, propose a second line therapy that specifically targets an observed genomic defect. Explain the target for the drug and how this target is altered in the patient’s tumor and how the drug will block tumor growth. For example, the target for the drug Lapatinib is the tyrosine growth factor receptor ERBB2 which is involved signals for cell proliferation and inhibits apoptosis. Lapatinib inhibits the kinase activity of the receptor and therefore blocks the uncontrolled cell proliferation signals of the defective receptor. Include information on potential side effects and complications with the drug regime you propose.
For the two therapies you select, explain why over time these therapies will likely stop working (e.g. develop resistance). Provide actual data on patient success with these treatments (e.g. Kaplan-Meir plot, overall survival rates (OSR), Progression Free Survival rates (PFS)… etc).
Suggestions
Your audience for this presentation is the patient, so think about how you can clearly explain the science and cancer biology to the patient without significant use of scientific jargon. Make sure you use pictures/diagrams that illustrate your points and then explain to patient.
The full patient genetics reports are provided in the attached file and contain extensive research and documentation for therapies based on the individual patient’s profile. This should provide you sufficient info and references to develop a targeted drug therapy regime.
A good source of information for these presentations would be the drug companies that produce the drug. Websites that promote the drugs often have graphics-rich explanations of how the drugs work and are used to educate both healthcare providers and patients about how their drug works.
Please add sources and the attached file used for the background on the patient.
