The information for this last module and final paper for this course this semester follows. For this last section, I am offering two condensed videos that offer just an introduction to the Atomists and the Pluralists – about 10 minutes each – which you can find at the following links. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swq4Amptblwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8mhmMdmLNoBelow are also my lectures on the topics (about 90 minutes both together):My lectures and the attached reading are REQUIRED, and the above videos are supplemental;https://us-lti.bbcollab.com/recording/d6e94cb61aac… attached reading is 33 pages and covers the Pluralists, the Atomists, and Zeno (the middle chapter). However, we are focusing only on the Pluralists and the Atomists, so you may skip the middle chapter on Zeno if you desire. The assignment link for the paper follows this one, right below.
After you’ve viewed the brief videos and read the two assigned chapters from the link above, please write a brief paper (as above, roughly 500-650 words, based only on these materials and NOT relying on any web or other sources) answering the following question: Can you sum up what the goals and findings of the Atomists and/or the Pluralists were? You may write about both, of course, but because these are such brief papers, we recommend that you choose one. In other words: basically, assuming you were, in turn, teaching these topics to someone else, what would you tell them about this group of Pre-Socratic thinkers? What questions motivated them? What were their theories or conclusions? And what relevance does their philosophy/science have to our world today? As before, please keep quotes minimal. You only need to cite direct quotes. Please use Chicago style formatting for any citations, and no citations are necessary if you do not use direct quotes. Email me with any questions.
